![]() I included a link to it in my e-mail to the company where I gave plenty of details about what my character creator would be like. In the case of Wild Card Creator, I created a prototype of the basic functionality and uploaded a video of me using it (along with me explaining some things) as an unlisted YouTube video. Are you planning on doing bare bones math? Or are you planning on making the whole content available? Give them a clear idea of what your creator will look like. Worst case they are upset with how you are doing things and may even resort to legal means to get you to stop.īut sending them an e-mail just saying "I want to create a character creator for your system, can I do it?" is really vague because it's not clear what your character creator is going to look like. Best case they don’t mind and like your product. If you make a character creator without their permission, they will eventually find out about it somehow (probably the same way any of your users would). Even if you are making a free product, I still recommend you get their permission. Most will be happy to work with you to create something that works well for both of you. Before you release it to the public, ask permission firstįirst off, I strongly recommend that you ask for the company’s permission to create a character creator for their system. If the system has an OGL or similar, or it's under something like the Creative Commons license, the company has already created clear guidelines for what content you can and can't use). ![]() (I'm going to assume that you want to make a character creator for a proprietary rules system. Whether something you create is technically legal or not, it's better to have a product that the company really likes and wants to see more of, rather than one that they want you to stop making. Rather than asking “What laws do I have to consider, and what is allowed in it and what isn't?”, I think the better question is “ How can I make a character creator that the company will be happy to let me continue making?”. ![]() I’m going to approach this question a bit differently. While I don’t have direct experience working with Catalyst Game Labs or Shadowrun, I think that my experience is pretty typical of building an RPG character creator for most systems. (I double check anything I actual play even with Herolab but it does seem to deliver significantly less errors.I am the developer of Wild Card Creator, a commercial character creator for the Savage Worlds RPG. And when I do that, I don't want to double check everything. But I often build characters when I'm bored just to see what different classes and builds can do. I don't think I used the latest release last time, but it was no beta or release candidate.Īll those are minor things, mind you. A few of those might also be fixed already. I'm sure there was more, but it's been a while since I used PCgen. sometimes after altering the skill points distribution I ended up with more skillpoints than I should have. Re-loding the character usually fixed that. buffs or special abilities like power attack often not showing up correctly. I think you could even select the bonus feats again manually. Battle oracle's weapon mastery granting all its bonus feats at immediately even at level 1. Eldritch knight getting his first bonus feat at the wrong level (I think it was level 3 instead of 1) Never could take weapon specialisation for my fighter1/wizard 5/ek 3 Eldritch knight levels not stacking with fighter levels for feat requirements. The basis is reusable for other characters (skills, ability scores, saves, equipment) so making a new one is mostly putting the right class features, feats, spellcasting and any companions on it. I just make my own simple spreadsheet that has the info that I need during my game. So instead of running with something overly comprehensive, or something not quite complete. The fact of the matter is: what you need to have on your character sheet depends on your character build, your GM and yourself. So it's not difficult at all to get excel (or open/libreoffice) to calculate things like save progression or eidolon natural armor progression from your level. Also, almost all the tables in the rules in which you look up what you get a what level are just linear functions being rounded down. Also, people who make these things tend to get over-enthusiastic with trying to implement all possible features, creating rather complicated equipment and feat sections, while on my own spreadsheet I just need to have options for the feats I actually take. ![]() Either you end up with 6 sheets of mostly irrelevant information, or you end up missing important options. I'm too cheap to buy hero labs, and all the things people put online for free are never quite what I want.
